The Art of Chipping — Choosing Your Landing Zone

Introduction

When chipping, trying to target the flagstick directly causes golfers to decelerate or pick improper clubs. Great chippers break the shot down into two distinct phases: Flight and Roll.

1. The Landing Zone Concept

Your primary focus when standing over a chip shot should be the exact spot where the golf ball makes first contact with the putting surface.

  1. Pick the Spot: Evaluate the green slope and green speed to choose a flat landing area.

  2. Select the Right Club: Match your loft (Pitching Wedge vs. 56-degree Sand Wedge) to achieve your desired ratio of air-time to ground-roll.

2. Incorporating eGolfRing Target Circles

Practicing without a visible landing target makes it difficult to diagnose whether a missed chip was caused by bad distance control or poor landing precision.

  1. Position the Landing Ring: Lay down a 3-foot eGolfRing on the green surface where you want your chip to land.

  2. Focus on the Target: Ignore the hole completely during your practice swing and focus 100% on dropping the ball inside the eGolfRing.

  3. Evaluate Results: If the ball lands in the ring but finishes far from the hole, simply adjust your club selection while keeping the same landing spot.
