Eliminating 3-Putts — Reading Sidehill Slopes & The Fall Line

Introduction

Three-putts are the ultimate round-killer. Most three-putts do not happen because of poor strokes; they happen because golfers misjudge the slope of the green and leave themselves awkward 6-foot downhill comeback putts.

1. Identifying the True Fall Line

If you do not aim far enough above the break, your ball will cross the fall line early and miss on the low side (known as the "amateur side").

  1. Low-Side Misses: A putt missed on the low side continues to roll further away from the cup because it follows the slope downhill.

  2. High-Side Misses: A putt missed slightly on the high side retains a chance to catch the upper edge of the cup or stop close for an easy tap-in.

2. Building Alignment Drills with eGolfRing

To stop guessing how much a putt will break, train your eyes with physical visual markers.

  1. Set Up an Aim Point: Place a 18-inch or 3-foot eGolfRing at your chosen starting line on a severe sidehill putt.

  2. Execute 10-Putt Sets: Stroke 10 consecutive putts focused entirely on putting the ball through the eGolfRing.

  3. Calibrate Speed: Notice how changing your stroke speed alters the required ring placement along the fall line.
