Green Reading Secrets — Mastering the "Apex Point" on Breaking Putts
Introduction
One of the most common mistakes amateur golfers make on breaking putts is aiming directly at the hole. When green reading, the ball must travel uphill relative to the slope before gravity takes over and turns the ball back down toward the cup. The highest point of this curve is called the Apex Point.
1. Why Visualizing the Apex Matters
If you do not aim far enough above the break, your ball will cross the fall line early and miss on the low side (known as the "amateur side").
-
Low-Side Misses: A putt missed on the low side continues to roll further away from the cup because it follows the slope downhill.
-
High-Side Misses: A putt missed slightly on the high side retains a chance to catch the upper edge of the cup or stop close for an easy tap-in.
2. Using eGolfRing as your Aiming Station
Instead of aiming at an imaginary spot on the grass, physical reference targets lock in your visual alignment during practice.
-
Place the Ring: Position a 3-foot eGolfRing target circle directly at the apex of the break.
-
Commit to the Line: Treat the eGolfRing as your actual hole. Your sole objective is starting the ball on a trajectory that passes through the target ring.
-
Watch the Curve: Once the ball rolls through your eGolfRing, allow the natural contour of the green to feed the ball down into the cup.
